OWI: Oel-Waerme-Institut gGmbH

OWI Oel-Waerme-Institut gGmbH, founded in 1998, is a non profit research institute which is targeting high efficient energy conversion methods for a sustainable and eceonomic use of primarily liqid fossile fuels.

The Federal Association of German of small and medium sized mineral oil trading enterprises is a share holder. The companies' long term strategic interests as well as their short term needs and requirements are strongly infulencing the research activities of this institute which is also associoated to the Rheinisch Westfäliche Technische Hochschule RTWH Aachen.

Main research activities

  • research in the field of heat and combustion technology.
  • innovative Systems for reforming liquid-fuels for fuel-cell applications.

Main fuel cell related activities

Based on the background the usage of liquid fuels in fuel cell applications is a core competence.OWI is qualified in

  • fuel-purification processes (desulfuration of liquid fuels),
  • various types of synthesis gas production processes (TPOX, CPOX, ATR, SR) and
  • synthesis gas purification (Shift, PROX).

Also system integration and short and long term testing and system evaluation are performed.

Activities and methods

OWI has a wide range of test benches to perform all fuel and reforming related analysis and tests.

Design und set up individual test benches for fuels and fuel cells is also a specific know how of the organisation.
