Improved Zirconia powders for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Types of Technology
Fuel cell, hydrogen production
Detailed Description
A UK company that is part of a large multinational group has developed a range of stabilised and unstabilised sub-micron-sized zirconia powders suitable for use in the manufacture of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC). The powders are pre-reacted and supplied ready to use. Furthermore, they are well suited to all fabrication routes including tape casting for planar cells and extrusion usually for tubular cells. The powders have been evaluated in many countries and have become the materials of choice for several developers in Europe, North America and Asia. The powders offered are suitable for anode fabrication, electrolyte manufacture and also as a cathode addition. The range has been further extended with materials suitable for ceramic ink production. The material has been proven to perform to the exact standards required in a wide range of fuel cell generators ranging from small man-portable 60 watt units up to multi-kilowatt units, which will be taken on to the megawatt stage. Typical chemistries of stabilised zirconias offered include; 3,5,8 and 10 mole % yttria and 6 and 10 mol% scandia products as the stabilising oxide. Innovations and advantages of the offer The powders are pre- reacted, of known and constant surface area, which allows stable slurries and pastes suitable for tape casting and extrusion to be formulated. The nature of the powder manufacturing process means that the viscosity of any slurry or paste remains within a narrow band. Other main advantages include:
- Consistent chemistry.
- Accurate particle size distribution.
- Constant surface area.
- Full traceability of materials.
- Proven results cited in independent research papers.
- Quality standard TS16949.
- Involved in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell development since 1991.
